Crops that are suited for Olive Mulch Plastic, Black Mulch Plastic, Silver Mulch Plastic, Red Mulch Plastic: Small fruits- strawberries in annual hill system, vegetables, warm season and cool season crops that are transplanted and for direct seeded crops that are seededon hills such as cucumbers and squash, cut flowers.

White Mulch Plastic:

Embossed 4 feet x 6,000 feet, 0.7-mil high-density polyethylene, 86 lbs./roll
Embossed 4 feet x 600 feet, 0.7-rail high-density polyethylene, 10 lbs./roll
White Mulch Plastic is laid between the rows. With the white reflective mulch, light levels in the plant canopy are three times higher than with bare soil. With more light reflection the plants photosynthesis increases. The White Mulch Plastic has dual properties: light reflection and weed control since a layer of white is conextruded over the black. More than a 30% increase in tomato yield has occurred when mulch is laid between rows and when the tomatoes are planted in a high density. (Compared to bare soil between rows) It is even tough enough to hold up under foot traffic during the harvest season. In northern states where the season is short, White Mulch Plastic is a vital link in improving yields by increasing the amount of light available to the plants. In more southerly states, where a summer crop is planted, White Mulch Plastic deflects heat and keeps the soil cooler.

Low Tunnels Hoop Supported Row Cover:

Clear (warns) slit or punched (3/8" holes: 4" spaces) .5 mil high density poly: 6 feet x 1000 feet, 15 lbs./ roll.
White (cool) slit or punched (3/8" holes: 4" spaces) 1.1 mil high density poly: 6 feet x 1000 feet, 15 lbs./ roll. Clear poly, no slits or holes: 6 feet x 8,000 feet, 116 lbs./roll. 6 feet x 1000 feet, 15 lbs./roll. Hoops # 10 smooth galvanized wire. 6.3 feet long, 100 packs, 33 lbs.
Low tunnels are ideal for the early production of many vegetable crops. The tunnels are constructed by installing 5 foot wide sheets of either slit or perforated plastic over wire hoops that are spaced about 4 feet apart. To prevent wind damage, the cover is pulled taut over the hoops (but not stretched), and the edges are secured with soil. Generally, the cover is left over the plants for 3-4 weeks. The slits and perforations provide daytime ventilation, eliminating the need for manual venting. Low tunnels are generally used in conjunction with black plastic mulch for weed control and enhanced soil warming. Frost protection of 2 to 4° F are afforded by the covers, but the biggest benefit is growth enhancement provided by the daily increments of solar heating. Daytime temperatures might be excessive under the cover if ambient temperatures are above 90 ° F. Under those conditions, partial removal of the cover might be necessary, especially for tomatoes and peppers that have open blossoms. In the southern regions Isolar is recommended. The cover has white pigments to reduce solar transmission, which reduces the temperature under the cover.

Advantages of slit/perforated row cover:

Outdoor crops may be planted about 10 days earlier than normal. Prevention of excessive heat with Isolar. Highest heat retention with clear perforated covers and slit covers. Earlier maturity and higher yields.
No manual ventilation necessary. Excellent for tomatoes, pepper, cucumbers, melons and many other crops.

Installation Tips: Apply when there is minimum wind. Handle with care to prevent tearing. Do not stretch the cover, allow cover to drape over the crop so that there will be sufficient slack for crop growth. Use wider covers for greater installation efficiency. Secure the edges with stories, sandbags, etc. To keep the insects out, cover the edges with a continuous furrow of soil.
